Between 2016 and 2019, this study assessed compensation paid by 92 major pharmaceutical companies to Japanese head and neck surgeons who held board certification from the Japan Society for Head and Neck Surgery for lecturing, consultations, and publications. The payment trends were evaluated and the payments were descriptively analyzed using population-averaged generalized estimating equations. The compensation packages for board executives with specialized certifications were also analyzed individually.
Within the 443 board-certified head and neck surgeons in Japan, 365 received an average payment of $6443 (standard deviation of $12875), a figure noticeably higher than the median payment of $2002, encompassing an interquartile range (IQR) from $792 to $4802. Information on OHNS away subinternship applications was sought from the Association of American Medical Colleges' Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program. Fourth-year medical students' views on the away subinternship application process were sampled via a survey distributed to OHNS residency program directors and Otomatch users.
Of the 129 OHNS residency programs, 103, or 80%, provided subinternships away from the main program location at VSLO. Application release dates, oscillating between January 18th, 2022, and June 3rd, 2022, were observed. The availability of release dates for products spanned the period from January 27th, 2022 to August 7th, 2022. A notable range of estimated costs was found to be $22 to $5500. A transcript (981%) and a CV/resume (903%) constituted the majority of application requirements. Sixty-four survey respondents contributed to a 13 percent response rate.
